Meteorological Predictions : Cyclonic Activity, West Bengal

Meteorological and climatological predictions for two cyclones affecting West Bengal have reported by the Howrah Meteorological Office. It has underscored the region’s heightened vulnerability to severe weather events. The Bay of Bengal, known for its cyclonic activity, remains a critical area of focus, particularly during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons.

The first cyclone has expected to form in the Bay of Bengal. This is likely to make landfall near the southern coast of West Bengal. This cyclone, categorized as severe, has anticipated to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and potential flooding.

The Howrah Meteorological Office forecasts that the cyclone’s impact will be most severe in coastal districts like South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore. In addition to the immediate threats of storm surges and wind damage, prolonged rainfall could lead to riverine flooding. River systems have already swollen due to monsoon rains in delta regions. Authorities have issued warnings for residents in low-lying areas to evacuate to safer grounds. They are coordinating disaster response efforts to mitigate the impact.

The second cyclone, following closely on the heels of the first, poses an additional challenge. This cyclone has projected to form further east. It has expected to travel along the West Bengal coast before making landfall. The cumulative effect of two back-to-back cyclones could exacerbate the region’s vulnerabilities. The Howrah office predicts that heavy rainfall from the second cyclone could worsen flooding, particularly in urban areas like Kolkata. The drainage systems have already overwhelmed in Kolkata.

Howrah Meteorological Office emphasizes the need for continuous monitoring and preparedness. The double impact of these cyclones highlights the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in the region, likely exacerbated by broader climatological changes, underscoring the importance of resilient infrastructure and robust disaster management strategies in West Bengal.
