Directed by Shawn Levy, previously known for directing ‘Real Steel’, ‘Free Guy’, and Night at the Museum series, ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ is the third instalment in the Deadpool film franchise, and the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shortly termed as MCU, the interconnected franchises of superhero films have seen significant drops in their recent years’ performance as audience’s reception to their recent endeavours. The pandemic caused this phenomenon to occur. We have seen that after the revoke of the lockdown, audiences were not as enthusiastic about watching a film in theatres as they used to be in 2019. This is also evident in India, where Bollywood and other regional film industries are still not able to come in at their previous pace. Rather, people are now more interested in exploring new visual content in their comfort, in their own homes.

But, if we only point at people’s discomfort at the social convention as the sole reason for box office dismissal, then it would be completely unjust. The audience of superhero films has largely received dissatisfaction from the recent ventures from either Marvel or DC or any other production house. The mammoth success of MCU in 2019 with ‘Avengers Endgame’ and the large popularity of Marvel led other Hollywood production houses to launch their superhero franchises too. But, the cliche plot line, mediocre performances, and sometimes below-the-belt VFX have displeased fans and made them shut their eyes to the films despite having big superstars and millions of dollars being spent. Last year’s failure of films and negative reception by fans resulted in Marvel scheduling “Deadpool and Wolverine” as the only film release for this year.

Right now, people need a special event to watch a film. An event that will give them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see their favourite actors or characters on the big screen. For example, Spider-Man: No Way Home became a sensation for bringing the trio together who have played the fan-favourite character Spiderman in films before. The collaborations, which were unimaginable on the silver screen before because of continuity cinema sense or narrative perspective, are now possible by bowing to the fans’ demand. In ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ lots of actors have played various Superhero roles in several previous franchises, which is the film’s main USP.

Here what makes ‘Deadpool and Wolverine different, is that fans have waited a long, long time to witness their favourite characters, Deadpool and Wolverine together in live-action. Above that, played by actors who have made the characters from comic books widely cherished, and exciting to the fans have added the biggest layer to the venture. Australian Actor Hugh Jackman brought Wolverine to the screen in 2000. Hugh Jackman is one of those actors who have enacted a single comic book role for a long time. After that, you don’t need me to say that the Deadpool character is a comic-book depiction of Ryan Reynolds’ original personality. Therefore, audiences have not found anyone more suitable for these two roles than them.

So, the celebration of Marvel enthusiasts is going on, and most of all, Marvel is back, baby!
